Student work
Breki Einarsson
Back in 2019, I took a leap and moved from Iceland to San Francisco to fulfill my dream of studying abroad and diving into the world of design. It has been a thrilling adventure, juggling my love for soccer and my passion for architecture on a scholarship with the NCAA at the Academy of Art University. Fast forward to today, and I'm proud to say I've earned my Bachelor of Architecture degree.
ARH 410 Studio 7 Project: Athletic Center & Library
Teenagers in the Western Addition neighborhood, previously redlined area in San Francisco, are not shown enough care in the neighborhood and that often leads them down a path of violence and street gangs in the hope of belonging.
According to Rene Strong, an active social worker in the Western Addition, there is a lack of established programs for teens in the community. Sport guided me through my childhood and teenage years. It gave me opportunities and taught me life values and most importantly a true sense of belonging.
This project seeks to give teenagers in the Western Addition a place of belonging through activity and sports. In order to anchor the project within the community, new program relationships and spatial conditions allow for increased interactions among people of different age groups. Active programs such as tennis courts and climbing wall were combined with a slower program of a neighborhood library. These prgrams overlap both visually and physically through glazed openings and circulation paths.
