New Hope Therapy Center

Using Symbiotic Design to Create Ecological Architecture

Bachelor of Architecture Thesis Project

Faculty
Jason Austin

This physical therapy facility is designed for injured athletes who have undergone very serious or life-changing injuries - injuries that not only impact the athletes on a physical level but will take a toll on their mental health for the rest of their lives.

Physical therapy centers often focus on the space needs of equipment while ignoring the potential for architecture to inspire and heal. Architecture has the ability to do more. Like other art forms, architecture can influence people’s emotions and feelings. Through design, architecture can provide a place that addresses physical and mental health of the occupants.

This project proposes a structure that becomes one with the mountainous site. The architecture creates a connection to the natural beauty of the site providing a healing environment for the injured athletes. Ultimately, the center offers the occupants an environment to address both physical therapy needs and mental health needs, giving these athletes a more hopeful outlook find new paths forward.
