Master of Architecture Thesis Project
The turn of the 21st Century witnessed seismic shifts in the U.S. job market, leaving working-class communities vulnerable. Adults, often underrepresented in education, require tailored solutions to navigate this changing landscape. This research proposes a novel architectural approach rooted in the concept of a “community campus” to redefine the traditional notions of “school” and “office.”
Focusing on Bayview Hunters Point, an area grappling with social and economic complexities, the project envisions a platform for professional adult education. By embracing flexible environments, the architecture aims to address contemporary educational and professional needs, offering an alternative to conventional structures. As remote work becomes prevalent, this initiative seeks to create communal spaces fostering non-traditional methods of working and learning.
The proposed architecture serves a dual purpose: facilitating adult education and revitalizing communities. With an eye on upward mobility, the project aims to provide a flexible learning and working environment, enabling individuals to adapt to employment trends. By reimagining the traditional notions of educational and professional spaces, this model stands as a beacon of hope for depressed communities, fostering positive social and economic impacts.
In essence, this project charts a course toward a future where architecture becomes a catalyst for change, transcending its physical confines to uplift communities, nurture education, and shape the evolving landscape of adult learning.
