Live Between Reality and Virtuality

Master of Architecture Thesis Project

This project proposes a specifically tailored housing solution for the emergent subculture of people basing their livelihood on live streaming channels.

Live streaming refers to online streaming media broadcasts during the actual time of the event to allow viewing and potential interaction through contemporary media devices. The thesis investigates the digital transformation in China, which is currently happening at an unmatched rate. The proliferation and prominence of live streaming in the country demonstrate the technology’s role in day-to-day life. Live streaming has found its way into mainstream markets through commerce and online gaming. Throughout the Covid-19 lockdowns, the popularity of live streaming in China has skyrocketed.

The project questions the idea of virtual versus physical realms by addressing technological proliferation with adverse effects of digital lifestyles and declining living standards. It proposes a highly dense urban block of interior streets, living pods, and production units, providing spaces for diverse scenarios within the streaming community. The architecture addresses but also highlights current problems resulting in a beautiful utopia for the life-streaming sub-culture that might be dystopian to others.
